I was born on December 20, 1981. The day my mother went into to labor she had the biggest suprise! Her entire pregnancy she was told she was having one boy. Well suprise!! Two girls!! Needless to say, my dad got fixed pretty fast. No more siblings after that suprise. My sister and I both weighed 5 pds 6 ounces. My sister came out breach and I head first. My sister does not have any developmental problems. However I have asthma and learning disabilities. We both were diagnosed with ADD. My sister jokes and says she kicked me around in my mom's belly. That is why I have more issues then her.. Nice huh.. Overall we were both healthy babies.
As a twin I tended to sit back and observe my sister do things first. Such as crawl, walk, talk, and of course get in trouble. My mom said I always wanted to see the outcome first before I tried anything. I learned a lot from watching my sister. My sister Beth walked first. She walked at 16 months and I at 18 months. Beth said I always made her get things for me.. I spoke at 20 months. My mom told me a story how we were riding in the car one day and my sister kept crying saying she wanted juice. I said get it... Mom always said I was a very quiet child. She thought it was so funny when I blurted that out to Beth.
Like I mentioned earlier, I was a shy child. I remember going to family reuions and holding onto my mom's or dad's leg. It is not that I did not have secure childhood or anyhthing. I feel I had a wonderful secure relationship with my parents.
As for a positive self concept. I developed a wonderful secure attachment with my parents. They always made it there first priority that we felt secure.
One memory I will never forget is when I was 4 years old at WhiteWater Water Park. My mother feels horrible about the experience. She can't believe I remember it. We had season tickets to a water park and went almost everyday. Mom was a school teacher so she was able to spend the summers days at the park with us. I was never a child that wondered off. However this one day mom said she called my name to leave. I remember standing underneath a waterfall and seeing a black woman looking at me. When I walked out from underneath the waterfall my mother and sister were gone. I was terrified. I walked out to the parking lot by myself thinking she would be in the car. While I was out there, a lady asked me where my mom was and I started to cry. She brought me to the lost and found. When my mom came, she took me into the bathroom and gave me the biggest spanking I came remember. I felt so confused at the time. Why is she spanking me?? I was so scared. Mom told the lady when she left the waterfall she thought I was behind her. When she turned around I was not there anymore. Today she told me she did not mean to spank me that hard but that was her first reaction. She was so scared and frustrated at the same time. Today I realize she did that because she cared about me.
Overall I developed at secure attachment with my family. My parents taut me that it was ok to show emotions. To be scared, happy, frustrated, etc. I learned when I was scared, I could go to them for comfort or a good laugh.
